This is a wonderful trip to the top of Mt. Washington. It was built in the late 1860s and was billed as a trip to the moon by the legislature that approved the project. There are two types of locomotives. One is run on steam fired with coal and the other is a modern diesel electric. I much prefer the steam locomotive. If you take the steambe were not to wear a white sweater. I remember this one lady in the front of the carriage with black spots of soot on her new sweater. She was not happy, so be aware of that issue.

Booked tickets online. Staff was good and the train was clean. Unfortunately fall foliage was gone by the time of our visit but i assume it would have been beautiful view.

What to wear. Do wear warm clothing any time of the year. It may be really hot at the start of the trip but I guarantee that you will experience completely different conditions at the top of the mountain. It will be appreciably cooler and you will be thankful that you brought an extra down vest to put on. You will have time to walk around the peak and there is one building there for tourists to warm up. There is also the weather station that is manned. This is off limits all year long. Also call ahead to check if the train is running that day if it is at either end of the season., that is Spring of Fall. The best time for views is after a storm as this clears the air. The views are worth the trip up as you are now on top of the highest mountain, Mt Washington, in New Hampshire.

This was a truly fun experience for everyone. Kids and grandparents enjoyed this equally, as did my wife and I. A nice informative ride up with beautiful scenery, and an interesting place to walk around for an hour or two at the top. We were also very fortunate it was sunny clear and 55 degrees with no wind the day we went up. The beauty and enjoyment of this attraction is directly related to the kind of weather you'll have when you make it to the top.

Get there on time! Try to get the seat on the opposite side of the train. Best place to take pictures. The song "Slow Ride" by Foghat, sung by the crew of MST3K, went through my mind while we went up the mountain. Seeing trees and buildings at an angle, when you are at an angle, was cool. One train conductor was leaning forward and never planted his face on the floor. Don't drop your phone on the floor, as one lady did, for it may make it to the bottom of the compartment:) I recommend adding this trip to your bucket list. Views were fantastic! Seeing towns from a distance and up high is cool. Prices are reasonable. Road to Cog Railway is in rough shape. You can experience "Piranha 3D" by feeding the fish in a stocked pond. They are hungry! Bring quarters for fish food and view finders.

If you're in the area don't miss this! Cog railways are super cool. On a clear day the views are amazing. Mt Washington is a unique environment. Bring your camera and your lunch the food at the summit is limited and mediocre. Dress warmly, even in summer it can be brutally cold.

Great experience at the summit. We were lucky to see both weather (sunny clear view and extreme windy with clouds).

The trip up is most exciting as the slopes are really steep. You must lean forward. Part way out the mountain the train pulls of to a siding and lets the locomotive coming down pass by. So do not worry when the train pulls to a stop. The view is very good when the weather is favorable. But often the top of the mountain is in the clouds and there is no view from the top. At other times you will pass through the clouds and then you are in for a real treat. Before you are only the peaks of the highest of the White Mountains. So do not cancel you trip if there are clouds. It is best to ask at the bottom for a report of the weather conditions at the peak.
